My publicly shared responses to the exercises set out in Barbara Bassot’s (2016) ‘Reflective Journal’.

Inspire Spiritual Health is an end result of a transition. A transition from the research and studies I have been undertaking for 15 years, on the roles and potentials of Spiritual Health to improve health by engaging wild environments. This fascination for me, evolved into the potential of people working alongside Siberian Huskies to aid them, to experience together as teams, benefits to their spiritual health and general health in the form of actual physical expeditions.

This could not occur for a number of reasons, the most significant being the destruction of my mental health; taking form as a severe and enduring chronic period of mental illness. I was much later to discover that an underlying factor to this is my being on the autistic spectrum (Asperger’s syndrome). I have had to identify what I could still use from what was left and try to  develop new strategies. I have since found that I need to manage myself very carefully; all, in order to try and prevent further meltdowns.

I strongly suspect my autism plays a major role in my continuing exploration of Spiritual Health. Spiritual Health is one of my special interests, quite possibly, my obsession. I have an academic and professional background in the field of health. I am driven by my need to care for people. This is who I am. This, coupled with my autistic trait of my all-or-nothing rigid thinking, special interests, drive, and caring are why I continue with this interest. This is why I transition Spiritual Health from the forms in my initial research to, Inspire Spiritual Health, as a practical achievable way forward for myself. I gain both relief and pleasure emotionally and intellectually from combining my interest in Spiritual Health with, the welfare of others. I can only do the latter vicariously now via the internet, as doing otherwise greatly increases my chances of meltdowns. My hope is that I can simultaneously learn through Inspire Spiritual Health, to improve my management of my autism ad my health in general, whilst also providing opportunities for me to learn alongside others in a format I can manage and to jointly share that learning. This, for the benefit of all of us now, and into the future. Thus, also meeting my need to be able to self-validate and to continue to express my caring.

The next exercise I will undertake relate to my ‘Motivations’ driving Inspire Spiritual Health.
